Right when it came down there was a crash between Ernie Mills and the #43 car that started the whole chain reaction.

A tire came over the wall and tore this guy’s head clean off. I mean one second he was there with a NASCAR hat on and a 36 oz beer in his hand, staring at the Hand, and the next there was just a stump. Blood and beer splattered the whole section.

I think there were 2 or 3 drivers killed right away, and a couple of fans, even before the stampede where we all tried to get out.

I am lucky to be alive except when I think about that hand I think maybe I’m just in for something worse. I think that guy had the right idea. If this is the end of the world, I need a shitload of beer.

Imagine watching Shiva’s third eye open, waiting for the Destroyer to undo all that exists. Imagine comprehending, in a single instant, the paradox of your own vast meaning and your own cosmic insignificance. I felt the terror myself, along with exquisite peace and joy.

I know in my soul that the Presence has not come to destroy. Or rather, it brings the destruction of the Tower: cataclysmic change that is both terrifying and necessary. And what follows the Tower but the Star, the Moon, the Sun! And after Judgment -- which I have always understood as rebirth and absolution, not apocalypse -- comes the fullness of the Universe.

These tales of doom and woe, the “hand of God” and the end of the world, these are all projections of an internal state of fear and confusion. To the infant, the catastrophe of birth must seem like death: the overwhelming light and sound and sensation, the loss of everything familiar.

Some folks have already asked me to lead a pilgrimage to experience this cosmic re-birth. I can’t lead anyone, but I will return with as many as want to go, as a fellow pilgrim. There is nothing I can tell you or show you that will have any relevance once you have experienced the Presence yourself.

I don’t know if it is because I had to stop going to class or if it is because Kendra’s father, John Lee Petrie, won’t marry me. He is living with Soleil Marie Smalls. I would marry him for Kendra even though he has three DWIs I would just not live with him because it would not be safe for Kendra because when he gets drunk sometimes he loses his temper. But I understand the sanctity of marriage and how it is important for me and for Kendra that we have a covenant with her father before God. And I would be faithful on him even if I never saw him another day in my life because I just want to have Kendra and raise her and to be in good standing in the eyes of God.

I have a job at the Dairy Queen but they cut my hours, so I don’t know when I will be able to get a new car.

For prom, everyone is getting henna tattoos. I paid $75 to get mine (Briana took this picture while I was getting mine but before she got hers.) On the other side there was this spiraly thing that circled around my nerochip. I saw something like it on French Vogue online. It was gorgeous! The woman who does the henna tattoos liked it so much that she took a picture of it and she’s using it as a sample. (Robin got one like it.)

Everyone has got those stupid nerochip earrings. I’m so sick of those I could puke. Ever since the Oscars, everyone wears them ALL THE TIME. But this was, you know, just SO FINE.

I get home and my weird dad asks me what’s that mess on my arms. I try to explain it to him but he says he won’t have anything A-Rab in the house and makes me wash it off. I tried to explain to him that this is from India, but he said that was just as bad.

So now everyone else is going to have stolen my idea, I’m out $75 and I’m going to look like a disaster. I may not go.

I know that email isn’t the confessional, but I don’t know what else I can do. I’ve tried going to the company chaplain, but when I try to talk to him, my throat closes up. Right now we’re at Yüksekova on the edge of the ice doing patrol duty. Ice is what everybody calls that slag after the nukes but actually, Urmia in post-Iran is pretty much normal—it doesn’t get radioactive until you go farther south. The place is full of mercenaries and crazies and criminals. But there are other people living in the town. People who were too poor to leave, refugees who were afraid of the camps. We fly over and do patrols sometimes. Sometimes when we fly at night, the whole desert looks this strange beautiful green. I asked if it was because of the nukes but some guy who had been in Africa said the Sahara looks like that, too. It’s beautiful.

Urmia is like Detroit or New Orleans or St. Louis. Abandoned. Only with more guns and less nice stuff. It’s the middle ages with Kalishnakovs. The people here are mostly Kurds. They hate us. We nuked their country. You don’t know what its like when everyone who looks at you hates you and wants to kill you and some of them have the means to do so. When we go on patrol the army gives us pills so you’re hopped up. We were on patrol for two weeks and sometime in the second week we were patrolling the bazaar. We’d been pinned down in firefights twice the day before. We have real problems keeping com guys. They target them. And medics. They target them, too.

There are no straight lines in the bazaar and I’m getting crazier and crazier the longer we’re in there. This little Kurdish kid, maybe ten, comes by on a bicycle and I watch him go past and then I see him flip back the blanket on the back of his bike and he has a GPS and he establishes our position.

I shot him. The thing is, I don’t remember it. I mean, I remember it like I remember seeing it. But I didn’t decide to do it. Someone else shot him. I mean, I shot him, I know. But the pills shot him. I swear to God. I feel responsible for shooting him, but I don’t know what I can do if I shot him without even knowing about it.
